Kitchen floor, day 3
Frustrated? Tough day at work? I’ve got a solution for you. Just grab your favorite hammer and a pry bar (and some safety gear, of course). Then find a friend who happens to be ripping out his or her kitchen floor and hope that there’s plenty of luan under it because that’s when the fun begins.
Luan is very thin sheets of wood pressed together into one thicker sheet so that the grain of each sheet runs perpendicular to those above and below it. This gives it a good bit of strength being as thin as it is. It also gives it the quality of making a wonderfully satisfying, ripping sound as you pull it up. When it is used as a backing or base for tile it is usually nailed or stapled about a million times per sheet. That adds equally wonderful popping and snapping sounds when the nails and stables pop loose as you pull up the luan.
So, if you need to let out a bit of aggression, channel your energy into something useful and help out a friend! We’re speaking from experience now, since we spent last evening tearing out the luan that was under the tile. Lor also managed to pull up a 3x4 area of tile, almost completely intact, by getting the pry bar under the luan and popping it loose all around. It was impressive!
