Brass & Bach

Friday night we went to see the River City Brass Band's (wikipedia)Cornets for Christmas performance at a local high school. Lor had been to see them once before, but I had not. They were fantastic! The music was great, and the show was just the right length to thoroughly enjoy without having my eyelids start to get heavy, like they do going to see Messiah.

The most exciting thing about the show for me was that the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh joined RCBB for show. I knew of them, but had never gotten a chance to hear them. They were excellent as well. You might think that it would be hard to blend an all-brass “orchestra” with a 60-member choir, but they did an amazing job.

They played and sang traditional Christmas Carols, as well as some classical and contemporary pieces. The highlights for me:

  • “Frosty the Snowman” trombone solo, by Ron Spang. Phenomenal.
  • “One Unwise Man ... don't feed your camel beans” by Lance LaDuke and The Malcontents. Hilarious.
  • There are more but I can't find our Program! Now where did we put that ...

If you have the chance, I'd highly recommend going to see Cornets for Christmas, or any RCBB show for that matter. I definitely want to try to see the Bach Choir now, as well.
