My first victim
I mentioned that I was planning to try my hand (or hopefully green thumb, as it were) at a bonsai, and last week on our first big trip to our new favorite nursery, I purchased my first victim , a Casino Gold juniper (juniperus chinensis).
It was a pretty raggedy looking specimen. After I cleaned it up a bit, and pruned some of the smaller branches from the base of the trunk, it doesn’t look half bad. I was even a little inspired.
I’m planning to take my time with this, giving it some time to acclimate, and trying to take in the shape before I decide how I want to train it. Hopefully the urge for instant gratification won’t take over, since that’d probably be a good way to kill it. Hopefully another bonsai book from Amazon will keep me busy until I’m ready to do some more pruning!
