Kitchen ceiling, we have plumbing!
After spending last week ripping out our living room and kitchen floors to make way for the new hardwood, I finally found time over the weekend to finish the plumbing for the upstairs bathroom drain.
This was the first real plumbing I’ve done, and it was nerve-wracking. I really had no idea if I was doing any of it correctly or not. Most of the supplies do not come with any sort of instructions, and the instructions you do get with certain items (like the PVC cement) pretty much assume you already know how to do it, so they aren’t all that useful for a novice.
After we cemented everything and let it cure for a bit more than the 2 hours specified on the can of PVC cement (that was the most useful piece of information to be found on the can, in fact), we tested it with the sink running full blast, hot and cold. Amazingly, there were no leaks. We also tested running the shower and flushing the toilet, since, previously, those would cause water to flow back into the sink drain pipe. Again, no leaks. I was also able to adjust the grade of the pipe just enough for it to be (barely) sloped correctly so that no water should flow back into, and collect in, the drain pipe (I hope!).
Luckily, we have to leave the ceiling open for another few weeks until we are ready to start that project, so at least if we do have a leak, we won’t have to demolish anything to find and fix it!
