Kitchen floor, days 5 & 6
Ok, I have an updated definition of true love: Staying up together three nights in a row to rip up your old carpet, and multiple levels of tile, luan, and linoleum, and your marriage survives.
We did have some luck with the linoleum in that it was glued to luan, which was, in turn, nailed to the plywood subfloor. So we were able to pry up the luan with the linoleum still attached–no scraping, chemicals, or heat guns required. The bad part was the way in which the luan had been nailed. I have about zero experience with this type of thing, but it seems a bit excessive to use 2 inch, corrugated nails in clusters of 4-6, spaced about 6 inches apart. Needless to say, it was about 4-6 times more difficult to get this layer of luan up than the previous layer to which the ceramic tile had been affixed.
After about 8 hours of back-straining work, though, we have a nice plywood subfloor, that, thankfully, is perfectly level with the subfloors in the dining and living rooms. Tomorrow … here come the new floors!
